modafinil is composed of two mirror image molecules:
S-enantiomer: half life of 3-5 hours, the weaker, shorter acting partR-enantiomer: half life of 10-15 hours, the stronger, longer acting partbecause modafinil contains both, you get roughly 12 hours of sustained effects. the S portion kicks in fast and fades. the R portion carries you through the day.
armodafinil is the R-enantiomer only.

contrary to popular belief, modafinil has some very interesting neuroprotective properties:

before i get into dosing and cycling, i must inform you of the possible risks:
sleep destruction: take it too late and you will not sleep. the 10-15 hour half life is not a suggestion. timing is everything.headaches: modafinil increases acetylcholine demand. without a choline source you will get headaches. this is one of the most common and most preventable side effects.appetite suppression: listed as a benefit but can become a risk. forgetting to eat for 12 hours has consequences. you still need proper nutrition.SJS: extremely rare (single digit per million) but serious skin reaction. if you develop a rash in the first few weeks stop immediately. this is the one risk you do not ignore.interaction risk: do not combine with hormonal contraceptives. modafinil accelerates their metabolism and reduces effectiveness.none of these are reasons to avoid it. they are reasons to approach it correctly. which is exactly what the rest of this article is for.
dose + timing + cycle
dose:
modafinil: 200mgarmodafinil: 150mg (stronger per mg, longer lasting, start here if switching from modafinil)start at 50-100mg modafinil if it's your first time. assess effects before going up to a full dose.
which one you should take depends on your goals and biology.
some people metabolize modafinil faster than others. for those people armodafinil hits harder and lasts longer than expected.
general rule:
modafinil: more forgiving. easier to time. better for standard 8-10 hour work days.armodafinil: longer runway. better for days where you know you need to go well beyond normal hours. but respect the half life, it will delay sleep.start with modafinil. switch to armodafinil once you understand how your body handles the R enantiomer.
you can go above a normal dose, this is what i do to get the same "euphoric" feeling as i got the first time of taking modafinil. 300mg modafinil works great for me during extra demanding days, but have to take it very very early, around 4am.
i would not reccommend going above 150mg armodafinil, really bad for sleep.
timing:
take within 15 minutes of waking. before any dopamine input. before your phone. before coffee.armodafinil taken after 8am will destroy your sleep. modafinil after 9am is pushing it.the earlier the better. your sleep window depends on it.my personal trick: set an alarm 2 hours before you actually want to wake up. take the modafinil. go back to sleep. by the time your real alarm goes off the effects are fully onset and you wake up already locked in.no groggy transition. no warming up. you open your eyes and you are already there. also helps improves sleep as it will wear off faster, in the evening.
cycle:
standard: 5 days on, 2 days off. this is the default and works for most people.alternative: 3 days on, 1 day off. better if you notice diminishing returns by day 4 or 5. keeps the effects sharper throughout the week.daily use is possible during high pressure periods. deadlines happen. but if you run it daily for an extended stretch, take a full week off afterwards to reset your baseline. no exceptions.
the goal is decades of efficacy. cycle accordingly.

200mg modafinil / 150mg armodafinil - the backbone400mg l theanine - blunts anxiety and jitters. if you like the edge, dont add it.500mg cdp choline - prevents headaches, supplies your brain with acetylcholine. optional additions for experienced users:
once modafinil is dialled in and you want to squeeze out the last 20%:
bromantane + l tyrosine
bromantane: upregulates the enzymes that synthesize dopamine and serotonin. not a dopamine spike. baseline dopamine elevation. you feel motivated, calm, and socially present without the edge. l tyrosine: same role as above. keeps the raw material flowing so the upregulation actually has something to work with.this option pairs cleanly with modafinil because it doesn't flood your dopamine circuits. it supports and elevate what modafinil is already doing.
modafinil is the backbone and main driver. bromantane is a strong addition.

the difference between someone who takes modafinil and someone who uses it correctly is not the dose. it is everything below.
the environment comes first:
one monitor, clean desk, nothing on it except what you are working on. visual clutter is a cognitive load.semi cold room.same instrumental playlist every single workday. your brain stops hearing it after a week and starts associating it with output. pavlov yourself into flow state.write down every spontaneous idea you have, this is important to not waste creative output, but also makes sure you can forget it fast and stay task focused.the first 4 hours are sacred:
modafinil within 15 minutes of waking. before dopamine. before input. before the world gets access to your attention.no phone. no messages. no social media. the first 4-6 hours are yours. protect them like they are worth more than everything else combined. because they are.start working immediately, you have the momentum of a fresh mind. momentum is a neurochemical state.if you want a break, keep it to staring. walking. nothing that rewards the brain with novelty. you want to continue your work without friction.avoid eating until the afternoon, digestion makes you lethargic and low energy. you can do a light breakfast.do not forget to stay hydrated. not just with water. with electrolytes. drink orange juice, milk, mineral waters.you have the manual. you have the stack. you have the habits.
